Two Dimes and a Nickel

"Some of us think holding on makes us strong;
but sometimes it is letting go."
~Herman Hesse~

In our home growing up, we used the words “two dimes and a nickel” as a code word to describe “change” –not always in the most loving manner-so sorry Mom-I am sorry about quite a few things. “Two dimes and nickel” pops into my head often these days….there seems to be a lot of loose change lying around the house right now. I have fantasized having an imaginary “older” sister, ten years ahead of me, that I could call up on the phone and ask a few of life’s questions....

How long does “the change” last? When should I lighten the color of my hair or my lipstick, so that it does not accentuate the fine lines showing up all over my face? At what age do you stop accumulating extra pounds and begin drinking Ensure? How old is too old to “start over?” Can you begin saving for retirement after you pay for everyone’s college? Do the beautiful floral dresses in the mall make my butt look fat? What should I be when I grow up? Do mother robins cry when the nest is empty or do they redecorate or fly away too? Are these the last snows of spring or the first snows of fall? Is half way across the country or half way around the world the new ”next door,” in our globally connected world? Have two dimes and a nickel become four quarters in this down economy? So many questions……

"You can only lose what you cling to."

No, that beautiful floral dress does not make your butt look fat. You look fabulous.

I don't have any wisdom to comment, but I agree change is in the air.

Beautiful writing mom, as always! I second Heather's comment.
I say you should come fly away with us... to the beautiful beaches of the Bahamas!
And bet your bottom dollar...or two dimes and a nickel...we will be back someday.

Fortunately, I DO have an older sister to refer to! You have alluded to many changes to come, but you haven't shared many details, so I will have to pin you down! I will admit, it is always been nice to have you in front of me to blaze the trail...(ok, except when we started up the wrong trail to climb Timp, but we turned around pretty quickly!)
